Knights of Columbus May 2012 All Saints Council 9709 St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Community http://www.kofc9709.org The Official Publication of Knights of Columbus All Saints Council 9709 COUNCIL RETURNS TO DURHAM BULLS ATHLETIC PARK Thanks to the efforts of Brother Mike Wrzesien, All Saints Council 9709 will have the opportunity to work 22 Durham Bulls games from May through August. The Council will be manning a beer and “pit beef” cart selling beer, soda, peanuts and barbecue sandwiches on the main concourse. Three Brother Knights are required for games Monday through Wednesday, and four for games Thursday through Sunday. The sign up list is on the Council website. Volunteers are required to be at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park (DBAP) no later than 5:30 p.m. to inventory and set up. Alcohol Law Enforcement (ALE) training is required for volunteers, and training already received at the former RBC Center is not recognized by the DBAP. The last scheduled training session was held April 24. Brother Wrzesien will be announcing future sessions as they are scheduled. Brother Knights not having received the training can still volunteer to work a cash register and sell other items at the stand. The Council expects to earn about $125 per game or roughly $2,750 for the season. The DBAP fund-raising activity was added to the Council's calendar to help make up for the lost season at the former RBC Center. The sign up sheet to work a game is on the Council's website. All Saints Council 9709 Page 3 SPRING 2012 OPERATION LAMB CAMPAIGN STARTS WITH $6,853.17 All Saints Council 9709's 2012 Operation LAMB campaign is off to a good start. The Council pulled in some $6,853.17 in donations for two weekends in April, and LAMB Coordinator Tim Stevens reported at the May 1 business meeting that there are still five shifts worth of money yet to be counted. Over the weekend of April 20-22, some 26 Brother Knights and one spouse filled 53 of the 68 slots available at the Stonehenge Harris Teeter, the Kroger at Strickland and Creedmoor, the Walmart at Brier Creek and the Harris Teeter on Leesville. Special thanks go to 12 Knights, one spouse and one granddaughter who volunteered for more than one shift: Brothers Mike Supianoski (7), Ralph Guenther (5), Tom DuPree (4), John Moster (3), Kent Siefkes (3), and Brothers Dave Bole, Dick Bridges, Don and Terri Donaghy, Mike Evans, Tony Halterman, Keith Houchin and Dave Vogelpohl, who each pulled two shifts. Over the weekend of April 28-29, some 24 Brother Knights and four spouses and children signed up to fill 43 of 78 slots at the Walmart at Brier Creek, the Walmart in Morrisville and the Kroger at Creedmoor and Lynn. Special thanks go to five Knights who signed on for more than one shift: Brothers Ralph Guenther (4), Mike Supianoski (4), Tom DuPree (3), Joe Azzopardi (2), Dick Bridges (2), Keith Houchin (2) and John Martin (2). There are still slots available for the weekend of May 5-6 at the Kroger at Creedmoor and Lynn, the weekend of May 12-13 at the Walmart in Morrisville as well as July 14-15 at the Walmart on Glenwood Avenue. Knights wishing to volunteer should go to the Council website to sign up under “Event Sign Ups.” The Council's campaign will recommence in the fall. All Saints Council 9709 collected some $19,303.09 last calendar year, which ranked fourth in the State for donations collected. The goal for this calendar year is $19,892, a three percent increase over 2011. The Council combined its collection for calendar year 2011 with five other area Councils and distributed a total of $42,700.04 to 13 agencies serving the intellectually handicapped in Wake County. Operation LAMB derives its name from Christ's words in Matthew 25:48: “as you did it to one of the [L]east [A]mong [M]y [B]rethren, you did it to me.” COUNCIL NETS $1,800 FROM STATE RAFFLE TICKET SALES Some 51 Brother Knights from Council 9709 volunteered to sell State vacation raffle tickets this year, and they sold a total of 720 tickets bringing $1,800 into the Council's General Fund. North Carolina Councils get to keep $2.50 from each $5 ticket sold. “I want to thank personally every Knight who bought or sold tickets this year,” said Brother Dick Bridges, Coordinator of the raffle ticket sales, to attendees at the May 1 business meeting. Special thanks to the top sellers for the year: Brothers Dick Bridges (100), Dave Vogelpohl (42), Tom DuPree (39), Shawn Bayle (35), George Corvin (30), Dino Pinelli (30) and Ralph Guenther (27). Four Knights sold 20 tickets each: Brothers Tony Evans, Dennis Kelleher, Ray Martin and Bob Weisenberger. Last year the Council sold a total of 777 tickets, the second most of any Council in the State. This year State assigned the Council 1,000 tickets to sell. Brother Tom DuPree and granddaughter Ashley (8) at the Brier Creek Walmart April 21. Page 4 May 2012 WARES SELECTED AS MAY'S FAMILY OF THE MONTH Council officers have selected Brother Hadon Ware and wife Carol as May's Family of the Month for their service to the Order, the Church and the Community. Brother Hadon first joined the Order in March 1999 and is a 4th Degree Sir Knight. He rose rapidly in the State hierarchy, first serving as Council 9709's Grand Knight for two fraternal years from 2004-2006. He also served as Faithful Navigator for Bishop McGuinness Assembly 778 for two fraternal years from 2005-2007, and served the Assembly as Color Guard Commander from 2002-10. He became District Deputy #9 in 2006 and served in that capacity for four fraternal years before taking on the role of Regional District Deputy #2 in 2010. He was appointed State Chancellor East in 2011. Brother Hadon and wife Carol are also extremely involved in Church activities. They both serve as Eucharistic Ministers, and Carol is an active member of Family Faith Formation and the Living with Christ Retreat, the Stewardship and Wellness Committees. Brother Hadon was named “Sir Knight of the Month” by Assembly 778 in February 2012 for his many contributions to the Order, the first time the Assembly has bestowed that honor on one of its members. The Wares were last named Family of the Month by All Saints Council in June 2010. BROTHER RALPH GUENTHER IS MAY'S KNIGHT OF THE MONTH Brother Ralph Guenther has been selected by the Council's officers as Knight of the Month for May 2012. He was last selected for Knight of the Month in March 2010, and he was nominated as Golden Knight of the Year for the State competition in May 2009. Brother Ralph has been a Knight for well over 20 years and has attained his 4th Degree. He is a stalwart member of All Saints Council 9709 where he has served as Grand Knight, Deputy Grand Knight and Trustee for two three-year terms. He is currently serving out the last year of his second term as a Trustee as well as serving as Coordinator for the Council's support of Special Olympics North Carolina and the USO of North Carolina. This past fraternal year he has volunteered his services to the Church's Parking Ministry, as a Eucharistic Minister and as a Cross Bearer at the 9:30 a.m. Masses. He stepped up to Fr. Bill's call for Small Christian Communities (SCCs) during Lent and coordinated an SCC with 15 members, including hosting two of the meetings in his home. He also assisted in clean ups in downtown Raleigh after tornadoes swept through the southern suburbs and has assisted at the semi-annual Council- sponsored American Red Cross Blood Drives. In years past Brother Ralph initiated and coordinated the Council's fund-raising activity at the RBC Center and managed funds received from the Council's participation with other Councils in fund-raising activities at the Durham Bulls games. Brother Ralph came to Raleigh via northern New Jersey where he worked for IBM for 22 years and New Jersey Bell for 19 years. Wife Carol died of cancer in 2009 after 49 years of marriage. Daughter Deborah lives in Greece with husband Demetrios and two grown sons, Dino and Jason. Son Will lives in Bluffton, S.C., and youngest son John, wife Meg and daughters Anna (5) and Lilly (3) live in Holly Springs. Carol and Brother Hadon Ware Brother Ralph Guenther All Saints Council 9709 Page 5 ALL SAINTS COUNCIL WELCOMES THREE INTO ITS RANKS All Saints Council 9709 inducted one new Knight and approved two transfers at its combined 1st Degree Ceremony and business meeting, Tuesday, April 3. Welcome to new Knight Mike Cronin (no relation to Brother Joe Cronin) and transfers Brothers Mike Bennett and Jerry Martinez! The All Saints 1st Degree Team inducted two other new Knights at the ceremony, one from Our Lady of Lourdes Council 12025 in Raleigh and one from Father Price Council 2546 also in Raleigh. All Saints Council still needs 13 new Knights for Star Council status this fraternal year. Although Brother Cronin makes the total brought into the Order by the Council to 13, the Council also accepted five withdrawals and suspended six Knights for nonpayment of dues. Unless the Council can add 13 new Knights by June 30, it will not win the Father Michael J. McGivney Award for membership. This is the second year in a row the Council has not met its recruiting goals. With five new insurance members against a goal of six, the Council will likely achieve the qualifications for the Founders Award for new insurance members, and the Colombian Award for service programs has never been an issue for All Saints Council 9709. A Council must meet the requirements for all three awards to achieve Star Council status. All Saints Council last won Star Council for fraternal year 2009-2010. L-R: Field Agent Tim Kilpatrick sponsored new Brother Mike Cronin into All Saints Council 9709. IS YOUR 401K PLAN THE BEST RETIREMENT PLAN? What if you could get a retirement plan that was less risky than your 401k, guaranteed not to decline in value, with no penalties for withdrawal, with growth tax-deferred and that was nontaxable at withdrawal? You can. With the Knights of Columbus. When you die, your spouse will only get the balance of your 401k and will have to take fully taxable distributions on an actuarial basis in accordance with your age at your time of death. The KofC plan allows for an immediate death benefit that increases annually and goes to your spouse tax-free at the time of your death. If you are unable to work, you may not be able to continue to contribute money to that 401k. If you become disabled, the Knights of Columbus will pay your premiums for you. Your 401k probably took a hit four years ago when the country entered the current recession. The KofC plan continued to grow over this period and has a guaranteed return. When you take money out of your 401k at retirement, every dollar is fully taxable. If you borrow money against your KofC plan, you do not have to pay taxes, and the loan can be repaid from the death benefit without every having to pay taxes. The Knights of Columbus Insurance Program was set up to protect its members. KofC Insurance enjoys the highest approval ratings from the Insurance Marketplace Standards Association for its superior and reputable business practices as well as the highest possible ratings year after year from Standard & Poor's and A.M. Best. The financial stability of KofC Insurance products is legendary in the industry. Do you even know who your contact is with your 401k plan? Does your 401k plan administrator even know who you are? Does he hold the same product he wants to sell you? Do you have to speak to a computer every time you call? That's not the case with your Council's Field Agent. You know who he is. He attends meetings. He's available when you call. Get to know Brother Tim Kilpatrick better. Contact him directly at 919847- 3799 (H), 919-880-3463 (C) or via e-mail at Timothy.Kilpatrick@kofc.org. Page 6 May 2012 COUNCIL SUPPORTS LOCAL SPECIAL OLYMPICS COMPETITION Five Knights and five spouses and friends of the Knights conducted the Awards Ceremony for the Wake County Special Olympics Aquatic Qualifier Competition at the Pullen Park Aquatic Center in Raleigh on Saturday, March 24. Some 250 athletes from counties all over North Carolina and from some counties in southern Virginia competed in 90 events with over 900 individual heats. Thanks to Brothers Jerry Cucurullo, Brian Denison, Ralph Guenther, Mike Hoover and John Moster as well as Edie Dickinson, Lauren Frizell, Sue Frizell, Mary Kane and Kris Rizzo for volunteering at the event. Brother Ralph Guenther, who has stepped in to coordinate Special Olympics activities for the Council, also accepted a last-minute request from Wake County Special Olympics Basketball on Feb. 8 to handle announcements and awards for over 125 contestants at the Green Hope Community Center in Raleigh. The athletes represented schools from throughout Wake County. All Saints Council 9709 has been conducting award ceremonies for Special Olympics North Carolina for a number of years and has been asked on at least two recent occasions to involve other Knights of Columbus Councils by providing training and support at events outside Raleigh. The Council will be supporting the North Carolina state swimming competition for Special Olympics North Carolina at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary June 2-3. See the Council website for the sign up list under Volunteers are still needed under "Event Sign Ups." About 15 volunteers are needed each day, and at the present time only eight individuals have signed up for Saturday, June 2, and four for Sunday, June 3. Brother Ralph Guenther made a special appeal at the May 1 business meeting for volunteers. Anyone with a question should contact him directly at 919-961-8564 or by e-mail at rguenther2@nc.rr.com. 2ND DEGREE CEREMONY FOR MAY 20 A GO All Saints Council 9709 will host a 2nd Degree Ceremony beginning at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 20, in the Anthony Hall Founders Room. There are at least two candidates from Council 9709 who have confirmed their attendance, and any other Brother Knight from Council 9709 wishing to take his 2nd Degree can do so by contacting Team Coordinator Brother Dick Bridges at 919-806-3816 or via e-mail at rbridges1971@aol.com. It is important to know the candidates beforehand because those Brothers who complete the ceremony will be immediately issued their 2nd Degree Membership Card. The ceremony lasts under one hour, and the Sunday afternoon time frame was selected to attempt to fit Brothers' schedules who precluded them from taking the degree on a weekday evening. Councils from District #9 as well as surrounding Districts have been invited to the ceremony as well. STILL TIME TO SIGN UP FOR COUNCIL CRUISE There is still time to take advantage of the two-for-one special cruise deal including free airfare for the Council's Caribbean cruise leaving Miami, Fla., March 18, 2013, and returning to Miami March 28, 2013. So far four Brother Knights and their spouses have reserved passage. The cruise will be on the Oceania's new ship the Riviera (1,000 passengers) and will visit Key West, Grand Cayman, Cozumel, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and Costa Maya, Mexico. To learn more, go to https://www.oceaniacruises.com/findcruise/caribbean/RVA130318/default.aspx . To view an Oceania 2013 calendar, go to http://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/?year=2013 . If you are interested in signing up for the cruise or have questions, contact Brother Tony Evans atevansa99@embarqmail.com or 919-554-9098. There is no financial commitment necessary at this time; however, all inside cabins for the voyage are already wait-listed.
