The History and The Mission

  • Room At The Inn was founded in 1994 by Pro-Life Catholics
  • Mission: Respecting and affirming life from the moment of conception, Room At The Inn provides a safe haven for single, pregnant mothers and their children, born and unborn, to help these young families move toward a new life of hopeful, independent, and healthy living.
  • Room At The Inn set itself apart from other residential maternity programs by:

  •   - Providing pre-natal and post-natal residential services for both mothers and babies;
      - Serving mothers who already have born children who are four years old or younger;
      - Offering residential services for up to 24 months;
      - Providing child-care at the home for babies and toddlers of residents; and
      - Drawing on traditional Catholic values to implement its program.
  • Non-residential programs: Pre-Natal Counseling Program providing professional counseling and material support to any pregnant mother in need; and an Extended After-Care and Outreach Program, which offers professional counseling and material support after the residential program.
  • Results: Room At The Inn has served over 3400 women and their children through the residential program (425 over 15 years) and the non-residential program (3,017 in just the last 5 years)

    Room At The Inn’s Next Step

  • 57% of all abortions are performed on women who have attended college and 61% of women having abortions have had at least one child previously, no residential maternity and after-care program anywhere in the Southeast is designed to serve pregnant college women, much less pregnant college women with born children.
  • Room At The Inn will embark on a new course to offer residential maternity services to pregnant college women—those unserved pregnant women who are most likely to have abortions.
  • The Plan: Room At The Inn seeks to raise $3 million to be used to construct and equip a new facility and to pay for other costs associated with the facility. As of July 30, 2009 we have raised approximately 50% of the goal and are counting on the Knights of Columbus to fulfill their pledge of $1M so we can break ground.
  • The Facility:
      - approximately 20,000 square feet of space. Located on Belmont Abbey campus, on land donated by the monks of the abbey.
      - two residential wings that will accommodate 15 mothers, 15 infants and 8 toddlers—tripling the current capacity to serve at-risk mothers.
      - amenities attractive to college students and designed to meet their distinct needs, including a location in close proximity to a college campus
      - a number of common areas, including laundry facilities, an indoor children’s play room, a chapel, a kitchen and a family dining area; as well as offices for counseling and staff.
  • Programs and Services Endowment

    Any funds raised in excess of the above will be combined with funds from the sale of the property to provide the base for an endowment to support programs and services.

    Why the Knights of Columbus?

  • We are a Catholic organization that supports life. Room At The Inn is a Catholic ministry that saves women and babies from abortion.
  • Their model parallels the model Fr. McGivney initially established to support families.
  • Room At The Inn is a nationally recognized organization that is financially sound, professionally managed and has consistently received clean external audit examinations.
  • The Knights of Columbus is the largest pro-Life organization in the world! Room At The Inn competes against the likes of Planned Parenthood, with their deep pockets and political connections. To take this dramatic next step they need our breadth and depth.
  • Room At The Inn has raised 50% of the capital funds required to complete the building and the Monks of Belmont Abbey have graciously donated the land for this building. Our unified commitment of $1 million will allow them to start building immediately.
  • By donating $1 million or more, The Knights of Columbus will win the naming rights for the building and, if successful, we will name it: “The Michael J. McGivney Center for Life”. This will be a very public witness to the pro-Life position of The Knights of Columbus and will honor the noble work of our founder.
  • Room at the Inn is already being recognized nationally by organizations like Feminists for Life, National Review, EWTN and Priests for Life. Their groundbreaking on a college campus will be a national event and we want to be a big part of making it happen.
